Why Don’t You Draw A Picture? It’ll Last Longer! And Other Retorts in Part XIII of 939 Drawings: My Facebook Friends’ Profile Pictures in Watercolor & Ink

Facebook Drawing Project

This is a rather small update on my Facebook Profile Picture Drawing Project. I just made another post in the series the day before yesterday, and this is what I have finished since then (+ a few started in on the next page that isn’t completed yet.)

This post also contains yet another image that, while it comes from Facebook, is not really a part of the project: Baby Pip with a Vampire Pacifier. These days, when I see something I “Like” on Facebook, an image that really captures me in some way, I don’t want to just click “Like” beside it. I want to draw it. So, whenever possible, I do just that. Baby Pip is too cute, so she’s had multiple appearances.

It’s probably a little strange that I do this. It seems odd in some way, stalkerish? I don’t know. But it can’t be more stalkerish than Facebook already is in and of itself. We look at little moments in other peoples lives all day through the medium of Facebook. Know what they ate, drank, when their baby first rolled over, their favorite movies, their political pet peeves, the fact that some guy cut them off in the Dunkin’ Doughnuts line this morning…

Normally we look at these moments and “like” and “comment” on them without hesitation, so why should I hesitate to spend a few moments longer with the ones that capture my eye? We’ve all heard of the snarky quip when one is caught staring at another person, “Why don’t you take a picture? It’ll last longer!”

Well, “Why don’t you draw a picture? It’ll then become a part of you forever.” This is the way my memory works, muscle memory to thought memory.

In Other News, I returned to Staples where I originally purchased this red, graph paper-filled composition notebook to grab a few more. I’m already far past halfway in this notebook, and not quite yet to halfway on the project, so I knew I’d need some more space. Luckily, these puppies were on sale for $1 each! I got one of each color.

There is nothing quite as exciting as a new blank notebook! Except for one you’ve filled to the brim with work, of course!

The title of this post is misleading. There aren’t really any “other retorts.” I’m sure I could come up with some if I thought about it harder. Instead, here’s a quote from one of my favorite authors that could be a great defense in the office. Be sure to bring it up in passing if you ever hear a coworker complaining about your messy desk. You’re welcome.

“Like a tropical storm, I, too, may one day become ‘better organized.”
