DIY Eraser Stamps with Uncle Chuck

DIY Eraser Stamps With Uncle Chuck

While studying with the Amazing Hancock Brothers 2nd week of Frogman’s, Uncle Chuck taught us his famous rubber stamp technique. I will now share it with you guys so you can make your own fun rubber stamp collection!

DIY Rubber Stamp

All you need to make these stamps at home is a pink eraser, a set of linoleum carving tools, a drawing utensil such as a sharpie marker or ball point pen and an ink pad. The linoleum tools can be purchased at your local art store, or online, such as this Speedball set available from DickBlick.com for about $8.00.

Draw your image onto the eraser with ink pen or sharpie. Blake and I drew the orange bread tag above. On the other side, I drew a leg bone. You can use all sides of the stamp to carve, even the edges! So feel free to draw images all over it.

Then decide on how you want to carve your image. You could carve out the black lines you drew, for a white-on-black image, such as Uncle Chuck’s stamps in the above photo.

Alternatively, you could carve out all the information AROUND the black lines you drew to attain a positive image, such as the figure stamp shown in the bottom right of the image below.

To print the stamp, just press it into a stamp pad and then press it onto paper–or any other surface you can think of! You can even print your skin to make cool temporary tattoos. You can also roll the stamps with ink in the traditional relief print process, if you so desire.

The above stamps were also carved by Uncle Chuck. In fact, he had a whole drawer of them. He enjoys stamping as a part of his printmaking practice. Check out the images below to see Charles in action making stamps like wild all over various objects.
